The man accused of fatally shooting a passenger aboard a Metro bus, then hijacking the vehicle and sparking a chase from South Los Angeles to downtown has been charged with 12 counts, including murder.

According to District Attorney George Gascón , Lamont Campbell, 51, is facing charges of murder, carjacking, kidnapping during a carjacking, assault with a handgun, attempted murder, robbery, four counts of kidnapping, felony evading and being a felon in possession of a firearm.

During the announcement Monday, DA Gascón praised the bus driver and law enforcement for their bravery and quick action in a dangerous situation.

He also expressed his condolences for the shooting victim, Anthony Rivera's family.

“My deepest condolences go out to the victim's family and all those affected by this horrific event," Gascón said. "Every day, countless individuals rely on public transportation to go about their lives, to work, to school, and to connect with their loved ones. It is unacceptable that anyone should feel fear while simply traveling within our county. I am committed to ensuring that all Angelenos can navigate their daily routines without the threat of violence looming over them.”

Los Angeles Police Assistant Chief Blake Chow said, “Tragically, today’s filing for murder will not bring back Mr. Rivera. However, I am hopeful that bringing the suspect to justice in the courts can bring a sense of closure to his family and friends.”

If convicted, Campbell could spend 90 years to life in prison.
