It may be fall, but the Southern California heat isn't over yet.

An excessive heat wave is already in until 8 p.m. Thursday, but according to the National Weather Service , another warning will go into effect from Saturday morning to Monday night.

"Strong high pressure over the region will bring hot conditions to the area through Thursday," according to the NWS . "Dangerously hot temperatures will be common across many valley, mountain, and inland areas. Slight cooling will occur on Thursday and Friday, then another warming trend will develop over the weekend."

Andrew Rourke, a senior forecaster with the NWS, told KNX News’ Jon Baird some areas in the valley and the interior areas could see triple digits.

“So this is just a normal heat wave, not our October, Santa Ana-driven heat wave,” he said.

Dr. Angelique Campen with UCLA said when it comes to the heat, it’s not just the elderly who are at risk for overheating.

“It’s high school kids that are competing in sports outdoors, people who are doing their regular exercise outdoors, or people doing manual labor outdoors,” she told KNX News’ Jon Baird.

Dr. Campen added that it’s important to stay ahead of the symptoms and hydrate.

“But if you start to feel lightheaded and if you stop sweating, those are times that you need to get help and get out of the heat,” she said.

The heat can also be dangerous for school kids who don’t have air conditioning in the classrooms. A report by UC Berkeley and Stanford University researchers found that up to 20% of public schools in California do not have functioning heating and air conditioning systems at all.

In August, Gov. Gavin Newsom vetoed a bill that would have required the State Energy Resources Conservation and Development Commission to create a “ Master Plan for Healthy, Sustainable, and Climate-Resilient Schools on or before March 31, 2026.”
