The Red Cross has an urgent need for volunteers in areas devastated by Hurricane Helene.

More than 1,000 Red Cross workers are on the ground across 10 states in the southeast, but Elise Levine said they desperately need more hands at their disaster shelters.

“We have stood up shelters anywhere that has appropriate space for people to lay their head, take a shower, eat a meal, be comforted, work with mental health or health care because they cannot be in their house right now,” she said.

Levine has helped with many disasters, including wildfires in California, and she says what’s happening in North Carolina right now is “the worst thing I’ve ever seen.”

“I mean, I lived in Northridge during the Northridge earthquake and I thought that was the worst thing I ever saw,” she said. “Many volunteers that are here and many staff that are here are folks that have been with the Red Cross for a long time, and they're saying that this is even worse than Katrina.”

The Red Cross will pay for volunteers to fly out for a two-week commitment to help in the disaster area. People with management or organization skills are especially needed.

Those interested in volunteering can sign up at redcross.org .
