The California Highway Patrol is looking for multiple suspects after a deadly road rage shooting that shut down the Five Freeway for hours in East Los Angeles.

Officials are taking the opportunity to warn about what happens when road rage gets out of hand.

The shooting happened at 4 p.m. in the heat of traffic and in broad daylight, leading to a multi-car pile-up, but it all started with two cars in a road rage incident.

Police say two men got out of a dark-colored SUV in the heat of traffic and shot into a gold Cadillac, killing the passenger and injuring the driver, who then started to drive the wrong way on the Five northbound in Boyle Heights.

CHP Officer Alec Pereyda told KNX News' Nataly Tavidian, "If you do find yourself in a situation where you are a victim of road rage, call 911, know where you're at, give information to the dispatcher, and if you can, head to the closest police station in case they are following you and officers can be there to wait for you upon your arrival."

According to a Forbes Business study, California tops the list of states with the worst road rate , with 11% of drivers saying someone has stepped out of the car to yell or fight.

Pereyda said they are unsure what causes people to get so angry behind the wheel in California, but it's important not to feed into the issue.

The shooting suspects are still at large.
