Santa Ana has ‘zero tolerance’ for encampments near railroad

Santa Ana says it’s taking a “zero-tolerance” approach to homeless encampments along the Union Pacific Railroad tracks.

Police have begun clearing out the camps multiple times a week. So far, officers have contacted 40 people, given out 34 citations for trespassing, and made five arrests.

According to Voice of O.C. , most people pushed out of the railroad area have set up new encampments in surrounding business and residential areas.

The effort comes after a Supreme Court ruling that allows cities to enforce anti-camping laws even when there isn’t available shelter to direct people to. In the wake of the ruling, Gov. Gavin Newsom directed local governments to remove encampments or lose state funding
