Humboldt, Kansas opens 100-year-old time capsule

HUMBOLDT, Kan. (KOAM) - 100 years ago, the people of Humboldt, Kansas placed a corner stone on what was then the new Humboldt High School.

With current construction on the Humboldt High School, the corner stone was recovered this past week and now the community is ready to open up the century old time capsule.

The placing in the corner stone of was they called "something for the ages" featured and an autographed baseball from Walter Johnson who was a pitcher for the Washington Senators from 1907 to 1927.

One of the first five men ever to be elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame, chosen in 1936 they were known as the "Five Immortals".

Now that baseball is nothing more but a swaddled-up ball of yarn. The baseball was found, along with a stamp, a coin, and a newspaper inside of a copper box welded together with melted lead.

Folded up inside the 100-year-old newspaper was a piece of paper dated the day the time capsule was created, July 11th, 1923.

Inside that document was the name of the founder of the town, Baron von Humboldt and the year the town was established, 1857.

The Humboldt USD 258 school board will now decide what to do with the items found in the time capsule.

Amber Wheeler, superintendent of Humboldt schools, says the community will create their own time capsule for the future residents of the town.
