MCDONALD COUNTY, Mo (KOAM) - As a part of Read Around America week students at White Rock Elementary were able to come face to face with animals from the Dickerson Park Zoo.

Inspired by the Dr. Seuss Novel, If I Ran the Zoo, White Rock Elementary welcomed docent, Nancy wiser and a wide array of animals, including Charlie the Chinchilla, Jumanji the Python and Isis the Hawk.

The whole point of today's event was to get students excited about reading and learning.

During the entirety of Nancy's presentation students had their hands raised and the eyes open as they marveled at the animals before them. As a former teacher Wiser understand why the students are so amazed.

"I would always invite the zoo to come into my classrooms and quickly noticed how much that connected with children and how I could teach a variety of concepts and skills through that avenue. And it was highly motivated. Kids really love to learn and see animals," said Wiser.

Students were also encourage to dress in animal print today for the popular occasion, cheetah print being a popular choice.

The school's Read Around America Week continues into tomorrow with a birthday party celebration.
