Boil water advisory issued for City of Caney

MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Kan. (KOAM) - The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) has issued a boil water advisory for the City of Caney public water supply system.

The advisory, effective May 26, 2024, was prompted by a line break that resulted in a loss of pressure, potentially compromising the system's safety and leading to bacterial contamination.

KDHE advises all customers of the Caney public water supply to observe the following precautions until further notice:

• Boil water for one minute prior to drinking or food preparation, or use bottled water.
• Dispose of ice cubes and do not use ice from household automatic icemakers.
• If tap water appears dirty, flush water lines by letting the water run until it clears.
• Disinfect dishes and other food contact surfaces by immersing them for at least one minute in clean tap water containing one teaspoon of unscented household bleach per gallon of water.
• Water used for bathing does not generally need to be boiled. However, supervision of children is necessary to prevent ingestion of bath water. Persons with cuts or severe rashes may wish to consult a physician before bathing.

The advisory will remain in effect until the conditions that caused the system to be at risk are resolved. This includes ensuring adequate pressure and chlorine residuals to prevent bacterial contamination. KDHE will issue a rescind order only after the water supply has been tested at a certified laboratory and deemed safe.
