    100 deadliest days

PITTSBURG , Kan. ( KOAM ) -- The period of time from Memorial Day to Labor Day sees a spike in traffic-related fatalities, especially involving teen drivers.

According to AAA, this period often sees a rise in deadly accidents due to various factors, including inexperienced teenage drivers and increased distractions among young drivers.

The Pittsburg Police Department teams up with the Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) to implement enhanced traffic enforcement measures, known as "You Drink, You Drive, You Lose" to increase driver safety.

This begins on August 17 and will run for several weeks and focuses to combat driving under the influence, but it also addresses other traffic offenses to keep the community safe.

To further prevent fatal accidents, Officer Bowman advises drivers to buckle up and stay focused.

"Your seatbelt could turn what might be a tragic event into just a minor injury or a fender bender," said Bowman.

Varsolona points out common causes of car crashes like speeding, texting while driving, and driving under the influence

John Varsolona, owner of Varsolona Driving School, stresses the role of parental guidance in preventing traffic accidents.

"The parenting skills comes in and I'd rather tell you no, and have tears here than say yes, and have tears at the hospital because I said go", said Varsolona.

Statistics from Triple A say that teen drivers are three times more likely than adults to be involved in a fatal car crash.

During the most most dangerous 100 days of the year, more than seven people die daily in traffic incidents.
