2 LEO injured in Galena, Kan., barricaded man taken into custody by SRT

GALENA, Kan. (KOAM) — Late Wednesday afternoon Galena Police were requested to perform a well being check at a residence on the NW corner of 11th and Main.

Two officers made contact with the male individual, it was discovered he had a warrant. Before they could detain the man he attacked them both. Cutting one officer with a piece of glass.

The man then retreated back into the residence that is so heavily surrounded by shrubbery, trees and junk it’s barely visible.

Chief Noble Dobkins of the Galena Police Dept tells us he requested assistance from the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office SRT (Special Response Team).

Since there was so much debris around the house they used a back hoe to take down a fence and make a path to the back door.

A contain-and-call-out was then initiated for the barricaded man as they used a loudspeaker repeating the man’s name and instructing him to exit the residence.

After a time they introduced gas into the house and then 5 officers entered the rear with protective gear and located the man hiding in a bedroom. He was taken into custody and removed from the home.

Chief Dobkins tells us the male will receive medical care at an area hospital. He is facing charges:

• 2 counts of Aggravated Battery Against a LEO
• Existing warrant charge
• additional charges to be determined

The injuries to the officers are non-life-threatening.
