MDC warns of zebra mussel risk in moss balls

(KOAM) - The M issouri Department of Conservation (MDC) is alerting retailers and aquarium owners to check moss balls for zebra mussels after reports of infestations in Washington state.

These invasive mussels, first detected in Missouri in 1991, can clog water systems, damage boats, and disrupt ecosystems.

Moss balls may contain zebra mussel larvae that could spread if the aquarium water is improperly disposed of. MDC advises those who bought moss balls in the past year to inspect and decontaminate or dispose of them if infected.

For disposal instructions, visit fws.gov/zebra-mussel-disposal-instructions , and for more on zebra mussel control, go to mdc.mo.gov/zebra-mussel-control .

Report any findings to your local MDC Regional Office .
