    George Washington Carver hosts 8th Annual Storytelling Day

    DIAMOND, Mo. (KOAM) - Today, George Washington Carver National Monument hosts its 8th Annual Storytelling Day on Saturday, August 24, 2024, from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

    The event, celebrating the National Park Service's 108th birthday on August 25, will feature a series of storytelling performances focused on American culture and history.

    The event will take place outdoors under a tent and is free of charge. Attendees are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and sack lunches. Storytelling Day is co-sponsored by the Carver Birthplace Association.

    Event Schedule:

    • 11:00 a.m. : Cherry and Jerry – This percussion/piano duo will perform ragtime, early blues, and jazz standards, sharing the music and stories of Missouri's African American composers like Scott Joplin and Tom Turpin.
    • 12:00 p.m. : Suzanne Jones – A high school science teacher and member of the Missouri Humanities Council Speakers Bureau, Jones will present traditional Native American stories from the Choctaw, Cherokee, and Delaware tribes.
    • 1:00 p.m. : Angela da Silva – A cultural preservationist and historian, da Silva will present "Lila, The Life of a Missouri Slave," highlighting the experiences and resilience of enslaved women.

    The event provides an opportunity to explore diverse stories and celebrate the rich history of American culture.
