Invasive lizards found in Joplin, added to Missouri’s prohibited species list

    2024-08-26

JOPLIN, Mo. (KOAM) - The Joplin area is facing an invasion of Italian Wall Lizards, an invasive species that poses a threat to local wildlife.

According to the Chert Glade Chapter , a partner with the Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) , these lizards are native to the Mediterranean region, are thought to have escaped from a collector's enclosure in 2001 and have since established a presence in North Joplin, particularly in the Murphysburg area. First reported to Missouri State Herpetologist Jeff Briggler in 2013, the lizards have been closely monitored as they continue to spread across urban neighborhoods.

Residents are urged to be vigilant, especially near natural areas like Wildcat Glades and Silver Creek Glade , where the lizards could outcompete native species for resources.

Despite efforts to keep their presence under wraps to prevent collectors from spreading them further, the Italian Wall Lizard has now been added to Missouri’s Prohibited Species List .

As of August 30, 2024 , it will be illegal to import, export, transport, sell, purchase, or possess these lizards in the state.

Those found in possession of these lizards after August 30 could face a Class A misdemeanor, with penalties including up to one year in jail and/or a fine of up to $2,000 .

Local authorities hope that by monitoring and controlling this invasive species, they can mitigate its impact on the region's ecosystems.

The public is encouraged to report sightings of these lizards, particularly in sensitive habitats, to the Missouri Department of Conservation or through platforms like iNaturalist . A research team from Texas A&M is also tracking their range and impact on native species, and they welcome photo submissions via their website, www.walllizards.com .

My dues they just called they are more long tailed lizards, alligator lizards. If he was fast enough to catch one usually by the tail, the little creature has a mechanism and breaking his tail off and escaping. The tail regrows.just a child experience.
