MISSOURI (KOAM) - Come election day Missouri voters will have to decide whether or not to amend the Missouri constitution to make sports betting legal.

The amendment would grant the Missouri Gaming Commission the authority to regulate licensed sports wagering, including online sports betting, gambling boats, professional sports betting districts, and mobile licenses for sports betting operators.

Under the proposal, a 10 percent tax would be applied to wagering revenues, with funds designated for education. The estimated annual tax revenue is projected to reach up to $28.9 million.

In neighboring Kansas, where sports betting is currently legal, in 2023 approximately $1.2 billion was wagered, generating $63 million in revenue. Kansas received just over $6 million from this revenue.

If approved, the amendment would allow individuals in Missouri to place sports bets without leaving the state, provided they are physically located in Missouri and are at least 21 years old.

If passed the measure would have no impact on taxes.
