    Young woman rescued by Joplin firefighters after falling off 30-foot cliff above Shoal Creek

    Joplin firefighters and a Newton County EMT going upstream to rescue the injured woman.

    JOPLIN, Mo. (KOAM) — Just before 4:45 p.m. Thursday afternoon reports of a person falling 30-feet off the cliff near Mother Nature’s Crack above Shoal Creek alerted E-911.

    Joplin Fire, Joplin Police and Newton County Ambulance units responded. One rescue crew went to the top of the cliff along Castle Drive and a second crew responded with a rescue boat to the Wildcat Park boat launch across Shoal Creek and downstream from the cliffs.

    A 20-year old female was conscious but injured at the bottom of the rock cliff. Rescuers used ropes to get down the cliff to evaluate her condition.

    The dangerous cliffs above Shoal Creek near Mother Nature’s Crack are hidden by the summer greenery.

    Deputy Fire Chief Andy Nimmo tells KOAM’s Shannon Becker on scene the safest way to take the victim out was by boat. EMS crews transferred her to the boat, then along Shoal Creek to a waiting Newton County Ambulance.

    She was transported trauma to an area hospital, the extent of her injuries is unknown.
