Joplin to dedicate Senator Ron Richard Memorial Park on Sept. 13

JOPLIN, Mo. (KOAM) - The City of Joplin will hold a dedication ceremony for the newly renamed Senator Ron Richard Memorial Park on Friday, September 13, 2024, at 11:00 a.m.

A portion of the Campbell Parkway trail and park will be renamed in honor of the late Senator Ron Richard, a key figure in Joplin's development. Richard played a crucial role in the establishment of multi-use trail paths in Joplin during his service on the city council. He began his political career in 1990, was elected Mayor of Joplin in 1994, and went on to serve in both the Missouri House of Representatives and the State Senate. Richard was known for his leadership as Speaker of the House and President Pro Tem of the State Senate, where he represented Joplin and Jasper County.

Senator Richard, a proud graduate of Missouri Southern State University, passed away in June 2023. The renaming of the park is a tribute to his lasting contributions to the city, particularly his work on Joplin's trail system.
