    (KOAM) -- Authorities respond to a fatal accident involving an excavator and a semi, U.S. Senator Josh Hawley visits with Joplin residents, and the Carthage Maple Leaf Festival kicks off.

    Below are the top three headlines to know before you head out the door.

    CHEROKEE COUNTY, Kan. -- Emergency personnel responded to a fatal construction accident in Cherokee County.

    An excavator was unloading material from the semi and a piece slipped, falling off the opposite side of the trailer, and hitting the driver of the semi.

    Authorities list the victim as a 50-year-old male.

    JOPLIN, Mo. -- A crowd of people gathered in Joplin in support of U.S. Senator Josh Hawley.

    Senator Hawley visited Fred and Reds Diner to meet with supporters.

    He shared his perspectives along with his disapproval of the way illegal immigration is currently being handled.

    He also shared his views on the upcoming election including the changes he hopes to see.

    CARTHAGE, Mo. -- The annual Maple Leaf Festival in Carthage is entering its 58th year.

    According to the Carthage Chamber of Commerce, the Maple Leaf Festival originally organized as a marching band competition.

    Now the chamber says they work hard to help showcase the original traditions of the Maple Leaf Festival all while creating new ones.
