Young man on motorized bicycle struck and killed on I-49 at Jasper

JASPER, Mo. (KOAM) — Just after 8:30 p.m. Saturday night reports of a person on a motorized bicycle struck by an SUV on I-49 in Jasper alerted E-911.

Jasper Fire & Rescue, Jasper County Deputies responded. Missouri State Highway Patrol were notified.

On scene we observe a northbound SUV had struck a northbound motorized bike from behind. Preliminary information from Troopers investigating tell us, the bike was in the driving lane.

Stephen Broddle , 71, of Kansas City, Kan. was driving a 2009 Buick Enclave. He was not injured.

David Hurick Baughman , 21, of Lamar, Mo. was operating a phatmoto motorized bicycle . He was pronounced deceased on the scene.

The Jasper County Coroner responded to claim the body. Next of kin were notified Saturday night before the release of names involved.

In the state of Missouri, “ bicycles and motorized bicycles may ride on any street except travel lanes of interstate highways or where prevented by local law ,” state Missouri State Statutes . Also note there is a minimum speed limit on interstates.

S&S Towing removed both vehicles and debris from the crash scene.

It is unknown if the motor was electric or gas that assisted the bicycle while riding. The brand phatmoto motorized bicycle offers both versions.
