    Ninety-nine wildfires burn more than 1.75 million acres in Oregon, Washington

    PORTLAND, Ore. ( KOIN ) — Roughly 99 wildfires in Oregon and Washington account for more than 1.7 million acres of land actively burning across the region, according to the latest fire report released by the Northwest Interagency Coordination Center.

    The largest of the wildfires is the Battle Mountain Complex, which has burned 182,858 acres and is 78% contained as of Aug. 12. The fire is composed of three different fires burning west of Ukiah. Other large fires burning in Oregon include the Falls Fire (150,941, 87% contained), the Lone Rock Fire (137,222 acres, 98% contained), the Crazy Creek Fire (85,767, 60% contained), the Telephone Fire (53,989 acres, 64% contained) and the Warner Peak Fire (39,923 acres, 6% contained).

    The largest wildfire in Washington is the Retreat Fire burning 14 miles southwest of Naches, Wash. As of Monday morning, the fire is 45,601 acres in size and 70% contained.

    “Existing large fires continued to exhibit active fire behavior,” the NWCC stated in its morning wildfire briefing.

    Roughly 9,377 firefighters are battling wildfires in Oregon. Oregon’s 2024 wildfire season has burned 1,484,551 acres, so far. Roughly 2,071 firefighters are working in Washington, where wildfires have burned 273,458 acres.

    ‘Terrifying situation’ as bullets fly in NW Portland

    On Aug. 8, the U.S. Forest Service announced that many new and existing wildfires may continue to burn until the region receives seasonal rain.

    At least 30 homes in Oregon and Washington have been destroyed by the 2024 wildfires.
