    ‘Spontaneous combustion’ causes large wood debris fire in Sherwood

    PORTLAND, Ore. ( KOIN ) — Firefighters battled a large brush fire in Sherwood early Wednesday morning that has continued into the afternoon, according to Tualatin Valley Fire and Rescue.

    Firefighters responded to the report around 2:30 a.m. The agency said the blaze was caused by a pile of reclaimed yard debris in an industrial area at the end of Southwest Dahlke Lane. It then spread to a nearby area.

    Although there were no more flames as of 9 a.m., Public Information Officer Timothy Nokes revealed crews are expected to remain on the scene until the afternoon. to ensure the fire is under control.

    “We do have that hot weather that’s coming up in the next couple of days, so we want to make sure this is out and cool,” TVF&R Battalion Chief Tim Nokes said.

    Officials said there have been no injuries or structural damage to report.

    Investigators determined the fire was accidental, “most likely caused by spontaneous combustion in the large pile of mulch.”
