PORTLAND, Ore. ( KOIN ) — A man is dead after shooting at authorities who were investigating a parking violation, Oregon State Police reported Thursday.

According to OSP, the Lincoln City Police Department asked other agencies for assistance with the suspect who shot at officers around 12:42 p.m. on Wednesday. Officials said he fled the scene in a vehicle, and then on foot.

State police deployed a SWAT K-9 unit, which determined the suspect would be found at 1905 NW Jetty Ave. Occupants told officials they knew the suspect but hadn’t seen him that day. Investigators later learned the suspect was inside the residence and secured a search warrant for the property.

Hours later, after midnight on Thursday, a SWAT team responded to the scene as “negotiators made numerous attempts at communicating with the suspect as well as issuing verbal commands through a public address system.”

OSP reported that he threatened officers multiple times before opening gunfire from inside the residence starting at 2:45 a.m. The agency said a residential fire broke out “for unknown reasons,” as the suspect exited through a window and onto the roof with a rifle in his possession.

According to law enforcement, four SWAT members shot at the suspect after he refused to drop his gun. He then fell from the roof to the ground.

Authorities said they pulled the suspect away from the burning building, attempting to give medical aid. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
