Families displaced after back-to-back fires in Vancouver Friday

PORTLAND, Ore. ( KOIN ) — Two families were displaced on Friday after two separate fires broke out around the same time in separate areas of Vancouver Friday afternoon, authorities said.

The Vancouver Fire Department said crews were dispatched around 1 p.m. to a report of a fire at 9901 SE Mill Plain Blvd, finding a commercial building in flames upon arrival. About 20 firefighters worked to extinguish the flames.

Shortly after arriving to the Mill Plain Boulevard fire, firefighters were notified of another structure fire and were dispatched to 16718 SE 1st St. Some crews from Vancouver Fire responded as well as additional units from neighboring fire departments, officials said.

“Upon arrival, Vancouver Fire department found a one-story home and additional property on fire in the Great Western neighborhood in Eastern Vancouver,” Vancouver Fire Department said in a release. “Both fires were extinguished quickly, and all structures were searched. No civilians, pets or firefighters were hurt in either fire.”

In addition to the two families displaced, firefighters said one person from the Southeast 1st Street fire was evaluated for potential medical issues but ultimately not transported to a hospital.

Vancouver Fire also dispatched a rehabilitation unit to help firefighters keep cool and hydrated as they battled fires in high heat.

The Vancouver Fire Marshal’s office is investigating the Mill Plain Boulevard fire while the Clark County Fire Marshal’s office is investigating the Southeast 1st Street fire.
