PORTLAND, Ore. ( KOIN ) — Portland police have identified the officer involved in a shooting last month that injured a man who was allegedly acting erratic and carrying a gun and a hammer in the Portsmouth Neighborhood.

The officer is identified as Nicholas Morales, a five-year veteran of the Portland Police Bureau, authorities said. Morales continues to be on administrative leave as the investigation continues, PPB said in a release.

The man who was shot was identified as 52-year-old Robert D. Seeger . On Aug. 28, he was transported to the Multnomah County Detention Center from the hospital where he’d been treated for the gunshot wound for several days. He faces multiple charges.

The incident leading up to the shooting happened on Aug. 24 in the 7600 block of North Portsmouth Avenue after a man was reportedly seen carrying a gun and a hammer in the early evening .

When officers tried to contact him, he took cover behind a car and remained armed.

Both the Special Emergency Reaction Team (SERT) and the Crisis Response Team rushed to the scene.

The man kept hopping from behind cars and in and out of a nearby apartment, officials said.

Authorities said officers deployed a “less-lethal round,” and then used deadly force by shooting a normal gun and wounded the suspect. However, he “continued to disobey commands from officers,” police said.

A K-9 unit was eventually used to take the man into custody and he was taken to a hospital for what police described at the time as non-life-threatening injuries.

Seegeris accused of three counts of unlawful use of a weapon, felon in possession of a firearm, burglary, three counts of menacing and previous warrants.
