PORTLAND, Ore. ( KOIN ) — A Central Oregon park is set to receive more than $1.6 million for future enhancements.

In a joint announcement shared on Tuesday, Oregon Sens. Jeff Merkley and Ron Wyden revealed the National Park Service awarded a Land and Water Conservation grant to Smith Rock State Park .

The funding will support the Oregon Parks and Recreation Department’s efforts to construct a new welcome center and upgrade other features at the site near Bend.

“As one of our state’s seven wonders, Smith Rock State Park stands out as one of our state’s most beloved natural treasures and a hugely popular site for Oregonians and visitors alike,” Wyden said, in part, in a statement.

“Oregon’s public parks and lands are core to our quality of life and state’s economy, and it’s essential to make investments that keep these special places safe, up-to-date, and accessible,” Merkley, who also serves as chair for the Senate Interior-Environment Appropriations Subcommittee, stated.

The park’s improved Welcome Center will feature an accessible restroom, outdoor plaza and gathering area. Additionally, the Visitor Improvement Project will increase accessibility at the Rim Rock Trail in both directions from the new center.

The current parking area will be expanded for larger vehicles and bus drop-offs as well.

Officials haven’t disclosed when construction will begin. Smith Rock State Park is open for camping from March 15 to Nov. 15. OPRD allows day-use at the site year-round.

Hopefully, Curry County will be remembered next in their State Parks list of needing trail upgrading and more. A dream spot of many beautiful places controlled by the State Parks Dept. that is in desperate need of proper and safe trails and upgraded campgrounds. Especially, for the price they charge to stay.
