PORTLAND, Ore. ( KOIN ) — One person was injured and a police officer was struck during an early morning shooting in East Portland, authorities said.

According to Portland police, officers responded to a threat with a weapon report near East Burnside Street and Southeast Grand Avenue and when they arrived they found two officers on an unrelated call who were at the scene of the shooting.

During the shooting, which police said involved people inside numerous moving vehicles, the officers and a community member took cover, but one officer was struck in the heel of his boot by a bullet, which got lodged inside.

While the shooting was unfolding, a gunshot victim was dropped off at a nearby hospital and officers determined that they were involved in the shooting.

The officer was taken to a hospital for a minor injury and the gunshot victim is expected to survive.

“I am beyond relieved to learn that both the community member and officer will be okay,” Chief Bob Day said. “What unfolded early Wednesday morning serves as a reminder that we must continue to take a holistic approach in addressing gun violence in our city.”

No arrests have been made, and anyone with information is asked to contact Portland police.
