PORTLAND, Ore. ( KOIN ) — The first round of autumn rains will likely bring a dusting of snow to the peak of Mt. Hood by Thursday morning.

The first round of wet weather this fall is dropping temperatures and snow elevations over Oregon’s Cascades. Snow elevations could fall as low as 5,800 feet around Mt. Hood Wednesday night into Thursday morning.

Snow accumulation isn’t expected to be any greater than a dusting to a half inch. This comes at a time when Mt. Hood and many other Cascade peaks have become nearly snow free. The late summer, early fall heat has helped melt what’s nearly left of the mountain snow.

Wednesday night and Thursday’s morning’s light snow won’t stick around for long. Temperatures will warm above freezing Thursday afternoon, but it’s a sign of the cooler and wetter weather Oregon expects to see in the fall.

Mt. Hood has already seen a few dustings of snow as early as August of this year. However, the visible dusting of snow doesn’t last much longer than a day. The more frequent and substantial snow showers don’t usually come until October for the higher elevations of Oregon.
