Police: Man arrested after 11 year old brandished gun at Skyridge Middle School

PORTLAND, Ore. ( KOIN ) – A man was arrested and cited after a child allegedly brandished a gun at Skyridge Middle School Tuesday evening, Camas Police Department announced.

Around 8 p.m. Tuesday, Camas police responded to the incident at Skyridge Middle School after a report involving sixth graders with a brandished gun.

Authorities said dispatch advised officers that weapons were secured in a truck, and everyone involved stayed at the scene.

Officers learned that an 11 year old was reported in possession of multiple guns and a knife during the incident.

According to Camas police, officers secured two guns and said the adult responsible for the guns, identified as 50-year-old Kurt Hall, was arrested and cited for community endangerment due to unsafe storage of a firearm in the second degree.

Officers identified the 11 year old as the child involved in the alleged brandishing, and said the case was referred to the juvenile prosecuting attorney for consideration.

Even though the incident took place on Skyridge Middle School campus, authorities said the incident was not directly related to school activities.

“We are greatly relieved no injuries were sustained as a result of this incident,” said Camas Police Chief Tina Jones. “At this time, there is no indication of an ongoing public safety risk related to this event. This remains an on-going investigation, and we are working closely with the Camas School District administration with a focus on school and community safety.”

In a note to parents, Camas School District said the incident occurred during a Clark County Youth Football practice, which is not a district-sponsored activity.

“After practice, some middle school students from Camas were involved in an altercation in the parking lot. A parent observed the situation and requested assistance from the coaching staff. The coaches responded immediately and reported that a knife was being either shown or brandished in a threatening manner,” the district said.

“As the situation escalated, a student reportedly retrieved a parent’s gun from their car. Thankfully no shots were fired, and no one was injured,” the district continued, adding that the students involved are under emergency expulsion.

“Please be assured that the safety of our students remains our highest priority. Weapons of any kind are strictly prohibited on all school grounds, and we are fully committed to maintaining a safe and secure environment for every student,” Camas School District said. “We are actively collaborating with law enforcement and other relevant parties as the investigation progresses.”
