Person missing after boat capsizes in Columbia River

PORTLAND, Ore. ( KOIN ) — Emergency responders are searching for someone who went missing after a boat they were on capsized on the Columbia River, authorities said.

At 11:39 a.m. on Wednesday, the Hood River County Sheriff’s Office said they received reports of a capsized boat near the mouth of the White Salmon River.

The sheriff’s office brought their boat alongside multiple law enforcement vessels. Responding law enforcement personnel arrived within 15 minutes.

There were seven total passengers, with six of them successfully pulled ashore. Two of the survivors were transported to the hospital. The final remaining passenger still hasn’t been located.

“The initial investigation determined the vessel was a 24’ North River fishing boat that was last seen in the area of the green navigation buoy near the White Salmon inlet,” the Hood River County Sheriff’s Office said in a release. “The search and investigation are both ongoing.”

Officials said no names are being released out of respect for the families.

Numerous agencies helped with the initial search, including the Columbia River Intertribal Fisheries Officers, the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife, the Skamania County Sheriff’s Office and a U.S. Coast Guard Helicopter. The Hood River Sheriff’s Office also used a plane in the search. Multiple civilian boaters also assisted.

Even more resources are expected to assist when the search continues on Thursday, Sept. 26, authorities said.
