PHOTOS: Goats, llama are natural lawnmowers for Eastmoreland golf course

PORTLAND, Ore. ( KOIN ) — When out on the green, you may not want to be chipping your way out of the weeds.

This is why Portland Parks and Recreation is employing some furry friends to help clean up the banks of one hole at the Eastmoreland Golf Course.

Partnering up with GoGoatOregon , a team made up of 10 goats and a llama named Dewey began munching their way through the overgrowth at the Southeast Portland golf course’s thirteenth hole.

According to PP&R, they’ve already hit the ground running since their arrival on Saturday.

“The llama has already deterred a curious coyote,” said John Ball, PP&R maintenance supervisor at Eastmoreland and RedTail Golf Courses. “He and the goats are exceeding my expectations, having a great time eating all the leaves and they are super cute. It’s awesome watching them work.”

Ball added he originally came up with the idea when he talked management for a difficult ravine near the hole with a United States Golf Association representative.

“The USGA representative said, ‘What about goats?’ And I thought this was genius,” he recalled.

The animals are expected to be working for two to three weeks in order to maintain the course without the need for equipment or harsh chemicals.
