PORTLAND, Ore. ( KOIN ) — A Vancouver man was shot and killed by SWAT early Friday morning, authorities said.

According to the Clark County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to a house on Northeast 71st Street just after 11 p.m. Thursday night following multiple reports of a man threatening his neighbors.

The first caller reported seeing the man with a handgun who had stabbed several tires in the neighborhood.

As deputies arrived on the scene, officials said they used a drone to get an overhead view of the situation and they spotted the man moving around his property.

Deputies approached the home in an armored vehicle, attempting contact with the suspect by phone. However, authorities said he was uncooperative and threatened to shoot.

Officials said the deputies then decided to pull back to not provoke the man and then shortly after heard at least one shot fired off into the air.

From above, officials said the drone caught the suspect retrieving a rifle from his garage, which he then fired into the air at least once.

As shots continued to ring out in the neighborhood, the armored vehicle moved back in and deputies said they continued trying to communicate with the man, who began firing shots at the vehicle.

While that was happening, shortly after 1:20 a.m., SWAT was called to the scene and more armored vehicles created a perimeter.

The suspect continued firing off shots and authorities said one shot struck the armored vehicle’s window, causing significant damage.

A shelter-in-place order was then issued over loudspeaker and Clark Regional Emergency Services Agency sent out an alert to the area.

Just before 2:30 a.m. SWAT arrived and began to surround the home.

According to Vancouver police, the suspect was seen inside his home making barricaded shooting positions.

At 2:36 a.m., officers said they saw the suspect stand at a sliding door with a rifle, wearing what appeared to be a ballistic helmet and gas mask. This was when a SWAT officer fired on the man, killing him.

The Lower Columbia Major Crimes Team responded to the scene and is investigating the officer-involved shooting.

The SWAT officer, who authorities said was a Vancouver police officer – as well as another officer who was in the armored vehicle with the shattered windshield – were both put on critical incident leave.

No law enforcement or community members were injured during the incident, authorities said.
