PORTLAND, Ore. ( KOIN ) — Spooky season is here, and missing out on limited flavors from one of Portland’s dessert chains could be the scariest thing of all.

Salt & Straw’s Halloween Series returned to scoop shops on Friday, with five ice cream flavors that may be familiar.

Neighborhood in Portland is one of the coolest in the world, according to Time Out

“Skip the doorbells, and ring in the season with a heaping scoop of an irresistible candy-filled classic,” the company said. “Dare to indulge in a green tea swirl of crispy, crunchy, edible creatures. Or pluck up your courage for a ghostly encounter with a confounding new flavor. With this many temptations abound, you’re sure to find a treat you’ll seek all October long.”

The Great Candycopia features Kit Kats, Snickers, Reeses and Heath bits all blended into a salted butterscotch ice cream, while Jack o’ Lantern Pumpkin Bread includes chunks of pumpkin bread mixed with cream cheese frosting.

The Creepy Crawly Critters flavor is courtesy of California insect snack shop Don Bugito . Salt & Straw mixed the brand’s “munchy, crunchy chocolate crickets and toffee-brittle mealworms” with its own sweet green matcha ice cream.

The ice cream shop previously offered these three flavors in 2023.

Another returning flavor is Essence of Ghost, described as “light and airy, an earthy blend of smoke and vanilla fills your nostrils.” The ice cream that also features chocolate was most recently served in 2018.

The returning vegan offering is Blackberry Tamales, which aims to honor Día de los Muertos with as a “tribute to Michoacán’s tamales from the Purépecha region of Mexico.”

Salt & Straw will offer free scoops of the Halloween flavors, and others, to children under 16 who wear costumes on Oct. 31. Dogs in costume will receive free pup cups as well.
