PORTLAND, Ore. ( KOIN ) — A man was killed after police say he walked out into a busy road and was hit by a passing car in Vancouver Saturday evening.

At around 9 p.m., officers responded to the area of Northeast Fourth Plain Boulevard and Northeast 54th Street on report a vehicle had hit a pedestrian.

Officials said the driver told police he saw a man walking directly in his lane of travel and could not stop before hitting him. The man then died from his injuries.

While police were at the scene, a passerby reportedly told officers they had seen the same pedestrian walking in the area where the crash happened and had to swerve out of the way to avoid hitting him.

Authorities said the driver involved in the crash cooperated with police and impairment was not a factor in the incident.

No further information has been released at this time.
