Photos: Once-in-a-lifetime comet dazzles Pacific Northwest skies

PORTLAND, Ore. ( KOIN ) — A recently discovered comet lit up the skies over the Pacific Northwest over the weekend.

Comet C/2023 A3 (Tsuchinshan-ATLAS), discovered in 2023, made its closest approach to Earth last week and is expected to be visible in the skies until Oct. 24, although cloud cover might make viewing it hard .

Over the weekend, Oregonians were treated to a once-in-a-lifetime dazzling display as the comet sat firmly on the horizon.

After the comet passes, it won’t return again for another 80,000 years.
