PORTLAND, Ore. ( KOIN ) — The New York Times may have featured only two local businesses on its list of 2024’s best restaurants, but the outlet’s recent roundup said Portland “remains one of America’s great culinary cities.” (We’re looking at you, New York Post .)

As part of the “Where To Eat: 25 Best series,” four NYT food writers compiled a list of what they deem as Portland’s best restaurants . The newspaper has published similar articles for cities like San Francisco, Nashville and Seattle — although the Rose City holds the title as “the dining capital of the Pacific Northwest.”

Organized in alphabetical order, the Portland list starts with West African eatery Akadi. The restaurant was joined by two other businesses in the Hosford-Abernathy neighborhood: Magna Kusina and L’Orange.

The latter was recently included in NYT’s annual roundup of the top 50 restaurants in the U.S. , along with Yaowarat — which made another appearance in the Portland-specific list.

The newspaper’s local dining guide features a plethora of restaurants that are no strangers to the spotlight. Kann, Haitian eatery from James-Beard-Award-winning chef and “Top Chef” finalist Gregory Gourdet, secured a spot.

In response to one of those comments, NYT Senior Editor Brian Gallagher noted “The word ‘best’ definitely has layered meanings.”

“We take many things into account when we’re putting these lists together,” Gallagher added, in part. “Food, atmosphere and service are all part of that. But so are price and accessibility, so we do try to keep in mind how expensive and difficult to get into a given place might be.”
