PORTLAND, Ore. ( KOIN ) — Oregon Cascades’ first major snow weather event of the season is taking aim on Thursday.

Nearly a foot of snow is possible for the highest points in the state. The Portland National Weather Service has issued Winter Weather Advisories for the central Cascades from 4:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Thursday, October 17, 2024. The advisory includes elevations as low as 4,000′.

Slick and hazardous road conditions are possible for many mountain passes through Friday morning. Slushy conditions are more likely at lower elevations due to the ground warmth that remains. Slick, snow-packed, and icy conditions will develop quickly on overpasses and at higher elevations.

The first round of fall weather alerts issued means that the impacts will be different than the experienced over the past few months. Use caution while traveling over the Cascades through the end of the week.
