    Oregon State Police hold K-9 naming contest for youth

    PORTLAND, Ore. ( KOIN ) — Oregon State Police are holding a contest asking for the youth across the state to name their newest K-9 recruit.

    The contest is open to Oregon children, kindergarten through 5th grade. Submissions can be made via an online entry form . The contest runs from Oct. 17-27.

    “Send in your ulti-mutt name for our fur-ever friend,” OSP said in a release. “The winning entry will be recognized with a round of a-paws and other fun prizes.”

    Each student is allowed only one entry. Five finalists will be selected from the submissions and the winning name will be decided with a statewide vote. The student who wins will get to meet the K-9 and receive other recognition from OSP. The school with the most participants in the contest will also receive recognition, officials said.

    The drug detection K-9 is a female Belgian Malinois, 2, who was certified through the Oregon Police K-9 Association. Her handler is Sr. Trooper Scott Show, of the Albany Patrol Office.

    “I’m excited to have Oregon youth involved in naming our K-9. Kids come up with the best animal names and I’ll be happy with whatever they choose,” School said.

    OSP also released a video on YouTube with more information about the contest and the K-9.

    The contest ends at 11:59 p.m. on Oct. 27. Only the entries submitted via the official online form will be considered.
