Coach Mizuguchi Resigns After Six Seasons With the Vulcans
UH Hilo Tennis head coach Kallen Mizuguchi resigned after six seasons leading both the Hawai’i Hilo Men’s and Women’s Tennis programs. Following a four-year playing career with the Vulcans, the hometown native and UH Hilo alum was named interim head coach for both of the Hawai’i Hilo Men’s and Women’s Tennis programs in Feb. 2019, guiding the men’s team to a Pacific West Conference Championship runner-up finish followed by the first of two NCAA Championship Semifinalist placements. Mizuguchi was given the permanent role in June and later followed up in 2021 by claiming the PacWest Conference title.
Father, 11-year-old daughters, rescued after flipping kayak off Kahana Bay
WAIKANE, Hawaii (Island News) -- A man and his two 11-year-old daughters were rescued after flipping their kayak in waters just outside of Kahana Bay, Friday morning. Honolulu Ocean Safety lifeguards and crews with the Honolulu Fire Department (HFD) responded after receiving a 911 call around 8:45 a.m.
DOCARE Officers Arrest Maui Man on Weapons and Other Charges
DOCARE officers arrested 29-year-old Sy Alapai of Kahului yesterday morning. While conducting routine beat checks on Ka‘ae Road, officers contacted Alapai who was found to have a loaded bolt-action rifle and a loaded semi-automatic rifle in his vehicle. The vehicle had expired plates and expired safety inspection. Officers say Alapai was previously engaged in illegal throw netting activity in an area known as ‘Rivermouth.” Although he said his nets and use of them were legal, officers observed firearms in plain view in Alapai’s vehicle.

Hawaii Governor Signs Bill To Create New State Fire Marshal
Hawaii soon will no longer be the only state without a fire marshal, thanks to legislation that was signed into law Friday. But it may take up to a year to set up an Office of the State Fire Marshal and hire for the position, Hawaii County Fire Department Chief Kazuo Todd said at a press conference in Honolulu at the State Capitol.
New County of Maui Office of Recovery-West Maui opens in Lahaina Gateway
The new County of Maui Office of Recovery-West Maui officially opened Friday with a normal operating schedule of 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday at Lahaina Gateway Unit 102-B, 325 Keawe St., Lahaina, near Ace Hardware. The center will serve as a centralized hub for essential departments and agencies related to recovery.
