SPRINGFIELD, Mo.- Students who will attend Weller and Mcgregor Elementary this fall were able to pick up a new backpack and supplies for the new year today through Resurrection Church’s day of giving.

“So, we just look at it as a very tangible way that we can just love our neighbor. Nothing in return. Just saying we want to help. We want to take care of it.

Mike Randle is the pastor of Resurrection church. He says this event is to alleviate Back-To-School stress for parents and students.

“I know one kid, for instance, they weren’t able to afford school supplies last year,” Randle said. “So, they told the school and all that was able to be given to them was a pack of pencils, a glue stick and a notebook. So, the schools didn’t have the supplies for them.”

This is the second year elementary students were supplied with backpacks and supplies. Pastor Randle also said over 1,200 families came to Saturday’s handout, which included more than just school supplies.

“Students and their families being able to receive lunch, being able to receive the groceries they needed for their houses and all their school supplies as well,” Randle said.

Other local organizations and churches partnered with the church to make today’s event possible, but Randle says he wants to do more.

“We did one school last year. We’ve done two schools this year. And I’d love to see this grow to a thing where we have churches across the city that adopt a school that is in their neighborhood,” Randle said. “[A school] they know they can take care of, or two or three churches get together so they can financially do it and take care of those schools.”

If you missed the supply handout, Randle said every student will have a backpack and supplies waiting for them on the first day. Randle says another grocery pickup event will take place at Weller Elementary next Saturday at 11 a.m.
