Missouri among the worst states for motorcyclists: study

Riding a motorcycle can be fun and exhilarating. However, there are serious risks involved, and they’re only increasing.

As motorcycle crash fatalities rise in the United States, Eastonlawoffices.com conducted a study by collecting data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) to determine where the dangers of motorcycle driving are most prevalent, including finding which states are the most or least safe for motorcyclists.

The study ranked Missouri as the third-worst state in the country for motorcycle crashes with a weighted score of 67.0. The study also found that 16.22% of fatal crashes in Missouri involved a motorcycle, and 12.58 people were killed per 10,000 registered motorcycles.

A big reason for Missouri’s high ranking stems from speeding incidents, with exactly 50% of motorcycle accidents in Missouri caused by speeding drivers. Another 25.61% of accidents in Missouri were caused by drunk driving.

In fact, the study found that the vast majority of motorcycle accidents across the United States are due to either speeding (37.2%) or alcohol (33.5%).

Hawaii was named the most dangerous state for motorcycles with a weighted score of 77.96, followed by Texas at 72.90.

Alaska had the lowest score in the study at 30.9, with South Dakota (35.1) and Wisconsin (35.9) right behind them.
