The first named storm in almost a month will make landfall in the United States on Wednesday, one day after the statistical peak of the Atlantic hurricane season. Francine is only the sixth named storm this year.

While the season has been calmer than predicted, there is still plenty of the hurricane season left. The official end of hurricane season is November 30th.

At this point in the 2023 hurricane season , Nigel became the 14th named storm. The 2023 season ended as the 3rd most active hurricane season on record with 20 named storms.

In May, NOAA predicted 2024 to be a very active season with 17-25 named storms, 13 hurricanes and seven major hurricanes. The August update didn’t adjust the original forecast by much, but so far, we are well below expectations. There have been 6 named storms, three hurricanes, and one major hurricane.

Early Tuesday, Francine is still a tropical storm, although expecting to intensify to a hurricane later in the day. Texas and Louisiana are bracing for the storm surge as Francine will make landfall on Wednesday.
