Sunday, September 15: Summer ain’t done yet

    By Jamie Warriner,

We’ve got a split scenario across the Ozarks this evening. Clouds and showers made for another mild day over the Eastern Ozarks with sunshine and warm temperatures the rule to the west. This led to a range in highs from west to east with a high of 85° in Springfield and only 72° in West Plains.

The spoke of clouds and wet weather will slowly push west into Monday bringing a risk of showers to areas as far west as along Hwy. 65. Just like today clouds and showers will hamper highs with sunshine and 80s near I-49 where there will be a lot more sun.

The pattern will shift gears again starting Tuesday as a summer ridge gains more of a foothold in the region. Temperatures will steadily climb with lows warming through the 60s and highs climbing into the low 90s by the end of the week. Yes, this is a little late for that kind of heat with our last 90° typically behind us (average last 90° high September 12th based on the last 30 years in Springfield). But, hot conditions can last into October. In Springfield, the latest 90° high was recorded on October 11, 1963 (91°).

The pattern is a quiet one with little to no rain in the forecast from Tuesday through Friday. Sky conditions will also be mostly clear, something to consider with Tuesday evening’s partial lunar eclipse taking place. If you’re interested in catching the eclipse, peak coverage will occur at 9:44 pm.

The late summer surge will linger into the upcoming weekend as a cold front approaches. The front is set to move through sometime late in the weekend and will likely bring a chance for at least scattered showers and thunderstorms. The overall look of the pattern takes on a cooler feel as a trough gets reestablished in the Eastern U.S. after next weekend opening the door to some Canadian air.
