Monday, September 16 forecast: Summer surge set to start tomorrow

Lots of clouds today, but another miss in the rain department. The rain remained anchored in the same areas with amounts adding up to over an inch in many spots east of Hwy. 63. Clouds did make for a mild day with highs near 80° in Springfield. Folks to the west and north enjoyed a sunnier and warmer day, and it’s those conditions we’ll be finding more of over the days ahead. In fact, a late summer surge will lead to a late-season streak of 90° highs by the end of the week.

For tonight, we’ll find clouds thinning out with bright moonshine and comfortable temperatures expected. There could be some patchy areas of fog by sunrise.

Sunshine and dry weather can be expected Tuesday with afternoon highs back above normal.

Sky conditions look mostly clear for Tuesday evening’s partial lunar eclipse. If you’re interested in catching the eclipse, peak coverage will occur at 9:44 pm.

The remainder of the week will come with lots of sunshine and also lots of heat. Highs will be in the low 90s on Thursday and Friday and in the neighborhood of record highs.

The late summer surge will linger into the upcoming weekend as a cold front approaches. Whether or not the cold front will have enough gas to clear the area remains to be seen. But, it should help boost cloud cover a bit along with an uptick in rain chances. This will help to blunt the heat a little over the weekend and into early next week. The pattern into next week is unclear at this stage with some of the guidance suggesting a favorable pattern for cooling while other guidance maintains the hotter than normal pattern.
