Over the weekend, the Space Weather Prediction Center hinted at another strong chance of seeing the Northern Lights over the United States. While there is a chance parts of the United States will see the Northern Lights, there are still a lot of unknowns.

On Sunday, the Space Weather Prediction Center sent out an update warning of “periods of strong geomagnetic storms on Monday.” The warning came after an X4.5 flare and associated coronal mass ejections earlier in the weekend.

The flare from Saturday will not reach Earth until late Monday. Once the ejection makes it to Earth, the aurora borealis could be visible. The best chance of seeing the Northern Lights will be in the upper Midwest, but last-minute changes could bring the light show further south.

If the Aurora Borealis is visible, the best time to view will be between 10 p.m. and 2 a.m. It’s important to view from a dark spot, away from light debris caused by towns. Once in a dark spot, look north just above the horizon.

As of now, a G3 magnetic storm is expected. This could be strong enough to affect radio frequencies and GPS connections.
