WEBB CITY, Mo. — A Branson man pleads guilty to a homicide last year in Webb City.

On Monday, Nicholas Berry, 52, pleaded guilty to second-degree murder. As part of the plea, Judge David Mouton sentenced Berry to 15 years in prison.

Shortly before 3:30 a.m. on April 9, 2023, Webb City police found Maria Whitaker, 39, of Joplin, unresponsive at a home on West 1st Street. She was later pronounced dead at a local hospital.

Witnesses told police Berry was “patting” Whitaker down, and when she slapped his hand away, he stabbed her in the upper chest and neck area. They said Berry also took an unknown amount of money out of her pocket and left the scene.

Authorities arrested him two weeks later in Springfield.
