Shell Knob man dies after SUV crashes into fence

BARRY COUNTY, Mo. — One person is dead and another is injured after a single-vehicle car accident north of Shell Knob on Monday, September 23, according to the Missouri State Highway Patrol (MSHP)

Just after 2 p.m., a 2005 GMC Yukon SUV occupied by two people was northbound on Highway 31 one mile north of Shell Knob when the crash occurred.

The MSHP crash report states that the SUV traveled off the right side of the roadway after it failed to make a turn at a curve. The SUV then overturned and struck a fence, totaling the vehicle.

The passenger, 57-year-old James D. Larson of Shell Knob, was pronounced dead at the scene by the Barry County Coroner. The driver was taken by ambulance to Mercy Hospital in Springfield with moderate injuries.

This is the 80th fatality for MSHP Troop D in 2024.
