Tuesday, September 24 forecast: Opening up the windows tomorrow, umbrellas later this week

That fall feel is flowing now. The day came with lots of clouds and a little sun. Temperatures struggled to get into the low 70s thanks to the cloud cover. There were even some light showers during the afternoon. Today’s cloud cover is thanks to a storm swirling south out of Iowa, a storm that will become a dance partner for another storm later this week.

For tonight, we can expect clouds heading through the evening. A few showers will remain possible, mainly west of Hwy. 65. By morning clouds will thin out with temperatures getting chilly. Another round of dense fog is possible near and west of I-49 with some patchy fog further east.

Wednesday and Thursday will offer up some fine September weather. Bright morning conditions will give way to partly sunny afternoon skies. A few pop-up showers are possible closer to West Plains and Alton, but most of the area will remain dry Wednesday. Thursday looks like a dry day ahead of a wet finish to the week.

The interaction between now Tropical Storm Helene and the upper-level storm will be interesting to watch. These two features will work together to generate rain to end the week and cool temperatures as the remnants and tropical moisture get drawn west into the circulation of the upper-level storm.

The potential is there for at least a few inches of rainfall out of the storm combo. This could be another “Francine” scenario with heavier rain amounts for those south and east of I-44, with amounts generally under an inch to the north. In fact, there’s been a shift in much of the guidance toward a drier scenario for the Ozarks. We’ll see if this trend continues.

The cloud cover and showery weather will keep temperatures chilly on Friday with a slow rebound through the weekend.
