MoDOT worker killed in line of duty near Sedalia

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Missouri Department of Transportation says the department and loved ones are mourning the loss of a senior maintenance worker who was hit and killed in the line of duty.

MoDOT says Jay Bone, 60, was hit while working on Route O outside of Sedalia in Pettis County on Tuesday morning. The department listed a flagging operation for pavement repair between U.S. 50 and Route N was taking place.

The Missouri Highway Patrol is investigating, and its initial crash report says an 18-year-old driver of a Peterbilt 379 semi-truck hit Bone at about 11:15 a.m., and Bone was pronounced dead at the scene at 11:30 a.m. He was taken to a funeral home in Sedalia.

Nothing in the crash report indicates the driver left the scene, and so far no arrest or charges have been filed.

MoDOT says Bone worked for the department since 2015, and the crash report says he lived in Smithton, Missouri.

The deadly crash happened less than a week after MoDOT held its day of remembrance for fallen workers , which took place in Jefferson City.
