There is a clear and present chill out the door with temperatures in the mid-40s before sunrise this morning. The coolness will fade away as the sun comes up and temperatures will reach the upper 70s to near 80° this afternoon.

Meanwhile, Hurricane Milton spun up into a Category 5 hurricane on Monday. Winds were 180 mph with pressures rivaling that of Katrina when that storm was at its peak. This morning, Milton has weakened to a Category 4 hurricane with winds of 155 mph. The storm will likely deal a devastating blow to Florida despite some more weakening before landfall late Wednesday night. A potentially historic storm surge is possible for areas near Tampa as the storm roars ashore as a major hurricane, likely the strongest in over 100 years for that area.

Back here at home the pattern couldn’t be more quiet. This will continue through the middle of the month.

Temperatures teeter-tottered between fall and summer last week and this week will be the same. A rather flat jet stream pattern will continue to keep most of the fall air north of the U.S. border with another round of summer heat flooding the middle of the country. Saturday may be close to breaking a daily record.

A cold front on Sunday will beat back the heat again for early next week.

As for rain, don’t look for it. No rain is expected through the weekend with rain chances possibly showing up after the middle of the month. The dry spell in Springfield has gone two weeks with another week getting tacked on. In the end, the dry spell may make it into the top 25 for consecutive days without measurable rainfall.
