Heads up! Northern lights will be possible in the Ozarks

The Ozarks will have another chance to see the Northern Lights over the next few nights as a G4 geomagnetic storm watch has been issued. The best night to view the Aurora Borealis will be on Thursday night.

A G4 storm watch qualifies as severe and watches at this level are rare. A coronal mass ejection , which is like an eruption on the sun, occurred on Tuesday night and is expected to be Earth-side by late Thursday.

In response to the CME, NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center indicates we could see a Kp of 8 or higher. With a Kp this strong, the aurora will move further towards the equator and will become very bright and active.

On Monday night, the Ozarks got a hint of the Northern Lights, as far south as Arkansas. The lights were more visible by camera.

The lights are expected to be even more vivid and active on Thursday. There’s a chance the event could be similar to May 2024.
