ROLLA, Mo. — Mark Twain National Forest says its firefighters have contained a wildfire east of Shell Knob and in the Table Rock Lake area over the weekend.

The fire was first spotted Saturday morning on Forest Service Land in the Cane Hollow area by the Central Crossing Fire Protection District. USDA Forest Service firefighters responded soon after and began suppressing the wildfire, containing 90% of it by the end of the day. By Sunday morning, the near 300-acre fire was 100% contained.

The cause of the fire is currently unknown as crews continue to investigate. Forest Service crews are also continuing to monitor the contained perimeter.

The Forest Service says the fire may still be visible to residents in the Table Rock Lake area on Sunday due to smoke from downed trees, leaf litter, shifting winds and more.

The Forest Service reminds the public to be careful with open flames in the woods due to drought conditions in southwest Missouri.
